Subject: MRT DUAL NAS SATA With FW G5S50033B30 -> Install Tinky
Posted: Sun Sep 07, 2008 2:55 pm (GMT 1)

Hello all,

i have a 35HD-DUAL-NAS SATA version running FW G5S50033B30 with two Samsung 500MB HDD.

I want to use both HDD's as storage to get the max storage capacity of 1 TB and i don't want use Raid because i don't want to loose all Data if one of the disks break.

The problem of the original FW is that you can manage just one of the HDD's in the User interface. Because i want to use NFS access to both HDD's i need to manage them.

Another point is that i want to use ssh instead of telnet for access to the NAS to be more secure.

All in all i think Tinky-LS will be a solution and meet my requirements and i consider to install it. But before i will do that i have some Questions that you hopefully can answer to me.

I am running FW G5S50033B30. In the Twinky-LS Installing instructions there is only a description for installing Twinky-LS from a 2.x FW but i think G5S50033B30 ist a 3.x Release.

- does Twinky also run with this FW version (Kernel: Linux nas 2.6.10_dev-versatile926ejs #47 Tue Feb 26 16:27:55 CST 2008 armv4tl unknown?)

- How is the upgrade procedure for this FW (just upgrade via Web-IF)

- can the data stored on the disks be accessed after Tinly-LS Upgrade (i am using ext3 Format)?

I want to use both disks separatly (no RAID) using NFS, SAMBA and FTP access with usermanagement.

- is this possible with Tinky-LS

- in general what other advantages (build in features) come along with Tinky-LS

Maybe these are simple question for NAS experts but from my side i want to be shure that i make the right choice before i upgrade and probably loose my data or brick my NAS.

Regards Jupp

Ciao,

Thank you for taking the time to reply, I will take a look on "NAS Portal". Maybe RAID isnt the way to go in the future, do you think JBOD would be any easier to recover from if I had the same kind of problem in the future?
Unless I'm mixed up on RAID #'s, a Level 0 is striping. This is what I have. Meaning my two 500GB HDD's are seen as a single 1TB drive. The data is split amongst the two drives, not mirrored. Mirroring would be a Level 1.... in which case both drives would have the identical data and I could just throw one of them into a Linux box.

They're just standard partitions - the raid layer just sits between the disks and makes sure what is written to one disk is written to another. So you can just plug one of the disks in to a linux box and mount the partition as normal.

35HD-DUAL-NAS-E :: New Torrentflux Package From MRT

Subject: New Torrentflux Package From MRT
Posted: Thu Sep 04, 2008 3:04 pm (GMT 1)

Thanks to a reply of Bruceas, that personally asked to MRT, we have an updated version for Torrentflux.

Please find it here from MRT:

ftp://ftp.syncquick.com/DUAL-NAS-E_...ntflux-1.14.bz2

User: download

Pass: sq123456 (pay attention, is just sq and not sql...)

Because probably MRT will remove the access early, i have uploaded the package to rapidshare as well:

http://rapidshare.com/files/142524116/torrentflux-1.14.bz2.html

Unfortunally the version is still 2.3 , instead of the actual 2.4 from Torrentflux, that add a lot of functions, but at least one very important for me, the autorestart of the downloads after a reboot.

I have spent hours and days in order to try to manually upgrade or install the 2.4 version, but i have always some problems with the python code...everything seams to work, but at the end the daemon is not running correctly, causing the downloads to die immediatly.

If anyone is already working in the same, please let me know your results or ideas. If we will be able to let it work, than we can prepare a guide...and ask my friend Manolazza to prepare the auto-install package, as already done for Firefly (nice job dude!)

In any case, i think that if we start to massively ask the update to MRT, they will do it, don't you think?
Hi Bruceas,

I wrote as well to MRT 2 weeks ago asking to upgrade torrentflux (but still eard nothing from them), God only know how much crazy im' going triyng to manually upgrade it or install it in the new version , but too much errors...too issues to solve...finally we got it!

Unfortunally, as in past, MRT probably already removed the credentials for the ftp that you have posted, i'm not able to login.

Could you be so king and upload the package to, for example, rapidshare? That would be so nice.

Many thanks in advance

Ciao

Yeah, I knew it was EXT2/EXT3...which is Linux. I assumed I could possibly use Knoppix or Ubuntu to try to access them... however, since it was a RAID 0 I don't know what to do about that. I don't think Linux is just going to see them without having something special to read that array.

Hi,

i just bought one of these on ebay and am still waiting for it.. in the meantime i have a couple of queries..

1. Is it possible to connect only one HDD? and does it read from 3.5" only? if a have a small one 2.5" will it be able to read from it? Also, somewhere i think i saw it supports PATA, is it correct? and which is fastest PATA or SATA?

2. is the bittorrent capable of transmitting on encrypted channel? my isp will reduce bandwidth allocation if it detects torrent traffic so what i do with normal bittorrent clients is enabling the encrypted option... does this has the same thing?

3. i've been reading about other firewares that can be flashed into this nas. I am a total newbie, is there a safe guide which i can follow should i decide to upgrade?

thanks!

Hi,

if the disks are ok, there should be a way to recover the data if you connect them to a linux PC.

The data is stored on a standard Ext2 or 3 partition.

Note that the user settings (IP address,...) is stored on the disk. That is maybe the reason why you can reach the NAS if you disconnect the disks.

There are also driver for Windows PCs for reading Ext partitions.

I have a Cavalry 1TB NAS server, two 500GB WD Green SATA drives, that I have a problem with. I set this up in a RAID 0 configuration. This worked great for months. Every now and then it would disappear from my network, but I could always restart it and it'd be fine. What has happened now is that I've lost all access to it. It is no longer detected... if you go to my router's status page my NAS is not located there. After a while of trying things out I determined that I can access the NAS GUI setup page fine, but only if the drives are disconnected. If you hook up the drives you can't do anything. I disconnected them and installed the latest firmware for the unit, unfortunately this was no help.

I removed the two drives and installed them into my desktop. I ran Western Digital's extended DLDIAG tests on both drives...they both pass fine. I don't know a lot about these....but I assume the RAID array has somehow been screwed up. If my NAS were "bricked", as I've heard the term, then I would assume I could not access the NAS GUI setup page with the drives disconnected either.

So mainly, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on this? If the array is just screwed up I assume I could connect the drives to my desktop, format them, then reinstall them in the NAS and resetup a new RAID array. I would prefer to try and fix the issue though. While I do have my important photos backed up to another drive, there is some music and such I would really like to try and recover. I've tried the application "Raid reconstructor" but it is unable to determine the parameters of the RAID... i.e., block/rotation size.

Anyone have this happen? Any ideas on how to correct the problem? Any ideas on trying to recover some of that data if I can't correct the problem?

Hi, I am no expert with raid.

But from a lot of posts at the nas-portal I know that you could connect the disks to a linux PC and read the data there or you can probably repair the raid if you have access to the NAS console with telnet or serial cable.

Unfortunately it is mainly in German. There is also a wiki. You could try the Google translation tool.

If possible make a copy of the disk before doing any changes to the data.

There are also file system driver for reading Ext2 or 3 disks from a Windows PC.

You could also post a question at their English part of the forum.

But please give as much information about your system, skill and capabilities as possible.

Regards,

Hi, Ive have my NAS for a while and everything has been working fine. I installed firmware G5S604110026300 and again everything working great. Turned my NAS off one night, then about a week later turned it on but could not connect. I ran the setup util and found the IP had changed, logged in with IE only to be greeted with a message saying "RAID system does not exist". I have two WD 500Gb hard drives setup in raid 0 config, all my family photos and videos are on here and yes you guest it I dont have any other backups. Anyone have any idea how to recover my data?

TIA.
